Network Participation in Gender Based Violence Regional Exchange Meeting in Rwanda


From the 26 – 28 October 2022, the Network shall take part in a regional exchange meeting in Kigali-Rwanda, on Gender Based Violence (GBV) hosted by Kvinna till Kvinna. The Network is taking part in this meeting as it is a part of the Women Gaining Ground Program (WGG) through CREA.

WGG program activities are focused on preventing and eliminating sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls, including those with disabilities as well as strengthening women’s leadership and women’s political participation in decision-making. The Network’s activities in Kenya have therefore focused on these broad themes.  

The Regional exchange meeting shall provide a unique opportunity to share innovative and good practices to address negative gender and social norms in GBV prevention and response. The Network shall take part in a panel session titled, Gender & Disability: Experiences in combatting social norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls with disabilities”. 

The Network, through representation by its members, continues to make strides, to occupy different spaces as women leaders  and feminist with diverse disabilities. It is the hope of the Network that we can continue to strengthen our membership to reach more women and girls with disabilities especially in grassroot areas in Kenya and work together to ensure that experiences of women and girls with disabilities are centered in all issues that concern us. Processing our Pains, our Traumas... Collectively

We live in a world that does not recognize pain," said Melissa Wainaina in a recent session with us. "To survive, we've been pushed to mask what we feel to fit in."   By Elizabeth Ombati and Mildred Omino Alphine Chepkorir is a girl with a disability from West Pokot whose story recently featured on Citizen TV about being denied a chance to join a private university she had been placed in.  Alphine Chepkorir amekosa kujiunga na chuo kikuu kwa kuwa mlemavu One of the key reasons she could not join the university is its inaccessibility for Alphine as a girl with a physical disability. As would be expected, there have been different reactions to the situation, with concerned citizens offering to give a helping hand.
