A project to make the green transition inclusive of women with disabilities
The Network is honored to have been selected as one of 16 partners under the Meaningful Engagement - Transformative Action (META) consortium that shall receive small grants to strengthen their capacities and influence. Our proposed project is on making the green transition inclusive of women with disabilities.META is a joint initiative by African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), the Coalition for Sustainable Development (SDGs Kenya Forum) and Stitching Women Engage for a Common Future International (WECF) with support from the European Union Delegation (EUD) in Kenya. Please read more about the META Consortium and its objectives on this link.
About our proposed project
The project aims to ensure that women with disabilities in Mandera and Nairobi counties are meaningfully included in green transition efforts.
While Mandera faces the harsh realities of climate change such as droughts, food insecurity and environmental degradation, Nairobi on the other hand faces growing waste management issues and unequal access to green spaces and sustainable economic opportunities.
Despite these challenges, women with disabilities remain excluded from climate change discussions, green trade opportunities and sustainable livelihoods. This exclusion is rooted in systemic inaccessibility, negative social attitudes and limited inclusive policies.
Members involved
At Network level, we shall implement this project with our Nairobi and Mandera members taking the lead. It is a project that will seek to build awareness and capacity on green transition and climate justice among women with disabilities; Facilitate access to sustainable livelihood options and green trade skills, and, Promote inclusion of women with disabilities in local environmental planning and decision-making spaces. By doing so, women with disabilities will be included and central in shaping a just, green future in both rural and urban Kenya.
“Through this project, we intend to increase the visibility, participation, and contributions of women with disabilities in conversations and actions related to the green transition,” said Jane Ndenga, a Network member from Nairobi County and who shall coordinate activities in the County.
“We aim to shift the narrative from exclusion to empowerment by ensuring women with disabilities are not only included in climate and environmental discussions but are also recognized as leaders and solution-holders,” said Fatma Mohammed, Executive Director at NONDO our member who shall coordinate activities in Mandera County.
As a Network of Women and Girls with Disabilities, we are honored to be a part of the META Consortium and look forward to the work that we shall do with women with disabilities in the area of green transition. We envision a future where women with disabilities not just in the two counties, but across Kenya, are recognized as key actors in building climate-resilient communities, with the tools, platforms, and visibility to drive sustainable change.
